Were the Alps underwater?

Around the highest point in the Alps there are 1389 recorded fossil finds, and 1347 of them are marine. 489 of them are within 25 kilometres of the summit. That is a lot of sea life for the top of a continent.

An ammonite is a shelled animal that swam in the sea, related to squid and octopuses. This one was dug up 17.3 kilometres from the summit of Mont Blanc — not on it. It is also the nearest fossil of any kind to the summit, which is worth noticing on its own: the closest thing to the top of the Alps that anyone has recorded is a sea animal.

A busy circle, and an empty one

Inside 25 kilometres of the summit there are 489 recorded finds, 456 of them marine. Compare that with the same circle around Everest, which contains nothing at all.

The two mountains are not different because one was under the sea and the other was not. They are different because people have dug in one place and not the other, and because the rock that reaches the surface differs. A count of fossils is a fact about where the rock is and where the palaeontologists went, before it is a fact about ancient geography — and a page that forgot that would be reading effort as evidence.

One more thing the geological map says about this exact spot: at the summit it records "Gletscher, Firn" — glacier and firn, which is snow partway to becoming ice. The very top of Mont Blanc is not rock at all.

So how did sea animals get up there?

This site does not know, and it is going to leave the gap visible rather than fill it.

For the Himalaya there is a source that describes what happened — a national park service naming India, Asia and the collision between them — and the Everest page quotes it. For the Alps there is no such quotation in anything this site holds. Borrowing the Himalayan one and swapping the names would be inventing the part that matters, on a page whose whole point is that it does not.

What is not missing is the count above, and the ammonite. Those are real, they are somebody’s recorded work, and they are enough to be going on with.

How sure is this?
The anchor is one summit, and the Alps run through seven countries — every number here describes a box around Mont Blanc rather than a range. Distances are from the summit to where a collection was recorded, never to where an animal lived. Nothing on this page rests on a reconstruction, and the question in the title is deliberately not answered with a yes or a no. Nothing on this page rests on a reconstruction of the ancient world: there is no model here and no map. Every count is the database’s own row and every age is the source’s published range — an estimate with its own uncertainty, reported as the source reports it rather than sharpened by us.
