Were the Rocky Mountains underwater?

Around the highest point of the Rockies there are 247 recorded finds — 180 marine and 58 from dry land, which is a far more mixed picture than either of this site's other mountains. And the rock at the very top is older than all of them put together.

Mount Elbert is the only one of this site's three mountains where the geological database holds a proper rock column — Eagle Basin, covering 23,263 square kilometres, with 27 named layers in it. At the summit itself the map records biotite gneiss.

Gneiss is rock that has been cooked and squeezed until its minerals line up in bands. The map dates this to between 2,500 and 1,600 million years old.

Hold that against the fossils. The nearest sea creature to this summit is 323.4–318.6 million years old. The rock at the top is older than it by more than a thousand million years — and it is not the kind of rock a sea bed leaves behind.

Pelmatozoa are sea lilies — animals, despite the name, that stood on a stalk on the sea floor and caught food with their arms.

Within 25 kilometres of the summit there is exactly 1 recorded find, and the database does not classify it as marine or terrestrial either way. Almost everything counted above lies further out than that.

The link this page refuses to make

This site already holds a sea that covered the middle of North America, and its rock sits under Denver about a hundred and sixty kilometres east of here. That sea has its own page. The obvious next sentence writes itself: the Rockies rose out of that seaway.

It was checked, and the data does not support it. The fossils near Mount Elbert and the fossils in Denver’s record share not one single occurrence between them, and no source this site holds explains how any Rocky Mountain rock got to the height it is at. So the two stay apart. A plausible sentence that turns out to have nothing under it is exactly what this site is built to catch, and it is more useful to show you the check than to quietly skip it.

Where this comes from

The census and the rock
Fossils from the Paleobiology Database (CC0) and rock from Macrostrat, read — a box half a degree either side of the summit of Mount Elbert, across the whole Phanerozoic. The marine and terrestrial classification is the database’s own, and the summit rock and its age are Macrostrat’s.
How sure is this?
The anchor is one summit and the Rockies run from British Columbia to New Mexico, so every number describes a box around Mount Elbert rather than a range. The map unit at the summit is a coarse description and not a sample of the peak. Distances are from the summit to where a collection was recorded. The title’s question is not answered yes or no, because the evidence supports a count and not a verdict. Nothing on this page rests on a reconstruction of the ancient world: there is no model here and no map. Every count is the database’s own row and every age is the source’s published range — an estimate with its own uncertainty, reported as the source reports it rather than sharpened by us.
