What was Panthalassa?

The name for the ocean that surrounded the world’s single continent, before the Atlantic existed and before the first dinosaur. The name is not ours — it belongs to the geologists, and this page shows you the sentence they wrote it in.

The sentence that names it

Much of Earth’s surface was covered by a large ocean called Panthalassa.

Unpacked: there was one ocean, and it was enormous. Not one ocean among several with a name each, the way the Atlantic and the Pacific have names now — one body of water covering most of the planet, because all the land had gathered into a single piece.

What was living in it

In the correspondingly large ocean, Panthalassa, marine organisms such as brachiopods, gastropods, cephalopods (nautiloids and ammonoids), and crinoids were present.

Unpacked: shellfish, snails, squid-like animals with shells, and sea lilies. Every one of those groups still has living relatives, which is worth sitting with for a moment — the animals in that sentence are not a separate cast from the ones in a rock pool.

Notice what the sentence does not say. It does not say how deep the water was, how warm it was, or how salty. Neither does this page, because no source here holds those numbers.

One continent, one ocean, and one other sea

The same page describes the shape of that continent as a huge letter C, and says the open part of the C held a second sea — the one with its own name and its own ending. That sea was the Tethys Ocean, and it closed.

This is one model’s answer, not a photograph. It shows the world about 250 million years ago — the age of the map itself, which is the closest the source gets to the ages on this site.

On this map 68.6% of the world's surface is below sea level — more sea than any other map this site holds. The yellow is not scattered the way it is today; it is gathered.

The map carries no labels, and that is on purpose. The people who built it drew where the sea was and never wrote down which sea it was. The name on this page comes from the quotations above, and it stays there.

So was my town under Panthalassa?

This site will not answer that, and the reason is more interesting than the refusal. A name like Panthalassa comes from a sentence, and a sentence carries no coordinates. The map above carries coordinates but no name. Joining them — taking the name from one and the place from the other — would produce a sentence neither source said.

There is a second reason. This map comes from a different reconstruction than the one this site uses to place individual towns, and the two disagree about land or sea at our towns on eight of seventeen tested moments. So the question about a town gets answered the way it always does here — from the rock underneath it and the fossils dug out of it. That is what the town pages are for.
